What is your SHIF contribution?
SHA (Social Health Authority) replaced NHIF on 1 October 2024 under the Social Health Insurance Act, 2023. Pick how you earn, enter your figure, and we will work out what you owe to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) — now branded Taifa Care.
How do you earn?Gross = basic + all cash allowances, before any deductions. SHIF is 2.75% of gross, with a minimum of KES 300 and no upper cap.
SHA replaced NHIF. On 1 October 2024 the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) was wound down and the Social Health Authority (SHA) took over, under the Social Health Insurance Act, 2023. Everyone who was on NHIF must re-register with SHA. Membership is meant to be universal — you generally need to be registered and contributing to access cover.
The three funds
Primary Healthcare Fund
Pays for primary care at community units, dispensaries and health centres (Levels 1–3). Funded by government — no contribution needed to use it.
Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF)
The main pool most Kenyans pay into. Covers hospital admissions, outpatient and specialist care at Levels 4–6, maternity and more. This is what the calculator works out.
Emergency, Chronic & Critical Illness Fund
Kicks in for emergencies and for chronic / critical illness (e.g. dialysis, cancer) once the SHIF benefit for that condition is exhausted.
What SHIF covers
Cover applies at SHA-empanelled public and private facilities. Specific benefit limits per condition are set in the SHA benefit package and are revised from time to time — confirm the current limit for your treatment with SHA.
How to register
- USSD: dial *147# on a phone with a Kenyan SIM, choose Register, enter your National ID and details, then set a 4-digit PIN.
- Online: go to sha.go.ke (the Afya Yangu / Taifa Care portal) and click Register Individual.
- In person: visit any Huduma Centre or an authorised SHA agent with your National ID for assisted registration.
- Self-employed: complete the household means-testing questionnaire via the portal or *147# so SHA can set your monthly contribution.
When is it due?
Contributions are due by the 9th day of the following month. For employees the employer deducts and remits to SHA; the self-employed remit their own. Late payment attracts a 2% penalty per month on the unpaid amount, and lapsed cover can interrupt your access to services.
