How to Get a KRA Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) in Kenya (2026)

A TCC proves you're up to date with KRA — you'll need it for a job, a tender, a work permit or AGPO. Apply free on iTax, get it by email, and here's how to clear whatever's blocking it if you're rejected.

A Tax Compliance Certificate is KRA’s stamp that you’re up to date. Employers, tenders, AGPO and work permits ask for it. It’s free on iTax — the catch is that you only get it if your account is genuinely clean.

The TCC is a mirror, not a form. It simply reflects your KRA status. If it’s rejected, the fix isn’t the application — it’s clearing the return or penalty behind it. So sort your filings before you need the certificate.

Step by step

  1. Get compliant first. Make sure all your returns are filed, all tax is paid, and there is no outstanding debt. Businesses must also be registered on eTIMS/TIMS.
  2. Log in to iTax. Sign in at itax.kra.go.ke with your KRA PIN and password.
  3. Apply for the certificate. Under Certificates, choose Apply for Tax Compliance Certificate, give the reason, and submit.
  4. Receive it by email. If you are compliant, KRA issues the TCC to your email — often within a few days.

Cost: free. Valid: 12 months.

Rejected? Clear the blocker

A rejection is almost always one thing: an unfiled return or an unpaid amount. Deal with that, then reapply.

Frequently asked

What is a TCC and who needs one?

It is KRA's proof that you are tax-compliant. Employers, government tenders, AGPO, work permits and some licences require a valid one.

How much does it cost, and how long is it valid?

It is free on iTax, and valid for twelve months — then you reapply.

My application was rejected — why?

Almost always an unfiled return, an unpaid balance, or a penalty. iTax will point to the obligation. Clear it, then reapply.

I have penalties I didn't expect — where from?

Commonly from unfiled nil returns in past years. File the outstanding returns (nil returns are free and quick), apply for a penalty waiver where you're eligible, then reapply for the TCC.

Do I need eTIMS?

If you are in business — a non-individual, or an individual with income other than employment — yes. The TCC check now includes eTIMS/TIMS registration for persons in business.

How fast will I get it?

Often a few days if you are already compliant; longer if KRA needs to review your account. Don't leave it to the last minute before a job or tender deadline.
