Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • 01Explain the analytics stack: what tools tell you where visitors come from, what they do, and why they leave
  • 02Compare GA4, Tag Manager, Looker Studio, Microsoft Clarity, Hotjar and Mixpanel by the question each answers
  • 03Choose a lean, mostly-free measurement setup and connect it to money, not vanity

Marketing without measurement is spending in the dark. Analytics answers the questions that decide where your next shilling goes: where do visitors come from, what do they do on the way to buying, and why do they leave without buying. The businesses that compound are not the ones with the biggest budgets, they are the ones that see clearly and cut what does not work.

Two families of analytics

Quantitative tools (GA4, Mixpanel) count what happens: how many, from where, how often. Qualitative tools (Clarity, Hotjar) show you why: heatmaps and session recordings of real people getting stuck. You need both, the numbers tell you where the leak is, the recordings tell you what is causing it.

The tools, by the question they answer

  • Google Analytics 4 (GA4): free, event-based, the standard for 'where does my traffic come from and what path do they take to convert'.
  • Google Tag Manager (GTM): free, the control panel for installing and managing tracking tags without editing code each time.
  • Looker Studio: free, turns your GA4 and other data into shareable dashboards, so you report from one clean view instead of screenshots.
  • Microsoft Clarity: free, heatmaps and session recordings that show exactly where visitors click, scroll and rage-quit.
  • Hotjar: heatmaps, recordings and on-page surveys, similar to Clarity with a freemium model and extra feedback tools.
  • Mixpanel: product analytics for funnels and retention, 'of everyone who started signup, how many finished, and where did the rest drop', strongest for apps and SaaS.

The lean free stack

For most SMEs: GA4 (where traffic comes from and what converts) plus Microsoft Clarity (why people get stuck) plus disciplined UTM links (so every campaign is tagged and traceable). That trio is free and answers 90% of the questions a small business needs, before you ever pay for Mixpanel or Hotjar Pro.

UTMs: the habit that makes attribution possible

A UTM is a small tag added to a link so your analytics knows exactly where a visitor came from. A link in your WhatsApp broadcast, your Instagram bio and your email can look identical to a customer but carry different UTM tags, so GA4 can tell you which one actually drove the sale. Without UTMs, most of your traffic collapses into a useless 'direct / unknown' bucket and you cannot tell which channel earns its keep. Tagging every campaign link is a five-second habit that turns guesswork into evidence.

The vanity trap

A post can reach 50,000 people and sell nothing, while a quiet WhatsApp broadcast to 200 loyal customers pays the rent. Impressions, likes and follower counts feel good and mostly do not predict revenue. Anchor every dashboard to money metrics, leads, sales, revenue by source, cost per acquisition, and treat reach as a means, never the scoreboard.

Check your understanding

A business posts the same offer link in its email, WhatsApp broadcast and Instagram bio, all untagged. Sales come in but it cannot tell which channel drove them. What habit fixes this?

Check your understanding

GA4 shows many visitors reach the checkout page but few complete the purchase. Which tool best reveals WHY they abandon it?

Exercise · try it first

Stand up a measurement setup that connects to money. (1) List the 3-5 questions you most need analytics to answer for your business. (2) Choose your tools for each (favour the free stack: GA4, Clarity, UTMs) and say which question each covers. (3) Design your UTM habit: the exact naming you'll use for source, medium and campaign so links stay consistent. (4) Define your one 'north-star' money metric and two supporting metrics you'll check weekly, and name a vanity metric you'll deliberately ignore.

Key takeaways

  • Analytics turns opinion into evidence: which channels and campaigns actually bring buyers
  • You can get most of the truth for free: GA4 plus Microsoft Clarity plus UTM links
  • Measure what moves money (leads, sales, revenue by source), not applause (likes, impressions)
