Brand is not your logo. Brand is the gut feeling people have about you — and that feeling is built by consistency. The same colours, the same tone, the same promise kept, again and again, until a customer sees your post for a second and knows it's you. You cannot out-spend big competitors, but you can out-consistent them.
The identity toolkit
- Name — easy to say, spell, and search. Avoid clever misspellings that break word of mouth.
- Logo — simple, works small (a WhatsApp DP is tiny), works in one colour. A clean wordmark beats a fussy icon.
- Colours — one main, one accent, one neutral. Use them everywhere, exactly.
- Type & voice — how you look and how you sound. Are you the trusted elder, the sharp expert, the friendly neighbour?
Look bigger than you are
Customers judge trust in seconds from visual cues. A consistent colour and a clean logo on every post, receipt and WhatsApp status signals 'this is a real, careful business' — which is exactly what a first-time buyer is nervous about.
Voice: pick a person
Your brand voice is easiest to keep consistent if you imagine one person speaking. A sacco might sound like a trusted uncle: warm, plain, reassuring. A youth fashion label might sound like a witty age-mate. Write down three words for your voice ('warm, plain, honest') and three you are not ('stiff, salesy, hype') — that boundary keeps every caption on-brand.
The consistency trap
The most common small-business branding mistake is a different look every week — one poster blue, the next red, a new logo variant each month. It quietly tells customers you're improvising. Lock the choices, then repeat them relentlessly.

Check your understanding
Why write down three words your brand voice IS and three it is NOT?
Exercise · try it first
Build a one-page brand guide for a real business. (1) Name check: is it easy to say, spell and search? (2) Design or refine a simple wordmark logo at /logo — make sure it reads at WhatsApp-DP size and in one colour. (3) Choose one main, one accent, one neutral colour (note the hex codes). (4) Write three words your voice IS and three it is NOT. Put all four on a single page you could hand to anyone who posts for you.
