Write a Cover Letter Kenyan Employers Actually Read (2026)

The pain: Your cover letter is recycled, too long, or missing the reference number — so it's ignored.

The outcome: A one-page, tailored cover letter that reads like a sales pitch and gets you shortlisted.

Golden rules: maximum one page, professional but personable, and tailored to every single job (never recycled).

The four-part structure

  • Header/addressing: your name, town, email, phone; date; then “The HR Manager, [Company], [Address].” Add a subject: “RE: APPLICATION FOR [POSITION], REF. NO. [XXX]” — Kenyan employers expect the reference number.
  • Opening: state the exact position and where you saw it (“as advertised on BrighterMonday on [date]”) plus your single strongest hook.
  • Body (2–3 short paragraphs): match your experience to the advert with measurable examples (“supervised 12 staff and cut stock losses 18%”); show you researched the organisation.
  • Closing: request an interview, thank them, restate contacts. Sign “Yours faithfully” (name unknown) or “Yours sincerely” (name known).

⚠️ Salary: only if the advert asks, state current and expected in the closing — a 15–30% uplift on current is the normal Kenyan ask.

Copy-and-adapt skeleton

  • P1: I am writing to apply for the [role] advertised on [source] on [date]. With [X years] in [field] and [certification], I can [core value].
  • P2: In my current role at [employer], I [quantified achievement]. I [second achievement matching a listed requirement].
  • P3: I am drawn to [Company] because [specific, researched reason].
  • Close: I would welcome the chance to discuss how I can contribute. I am available on [phone/email].

Questions people ask

Should a Kenyan cover letter include a reference number?

Yes — when the advert has one. Kenyan employers expect a subject line like 'RE: APPLICATION FOR ACCOUNTANT, REF. NO. HR/2026/14'. It signals you read the advert and helps HR route your application.

Keep it current: Advert reference numbers, deadlines and salary norms vary by employer — always mirror the specific advert.
