VSLA Share-Out Calculator (Excel) — the savings-group maths done right

This is where DIY spreadsheets break: at share-out, members must get back their savings plus a fair slice of the interest the group earned — and the only fair method is proportional to the shares each person bought. This workbook encodes the CARE/VSLA model correctly. You record shares per member and the cycle's interest, fines and expenses; it computes the value per share and every member's payout and profit automatically.

What's inside

  • Correct proportional share-out: payout = shares held × value per share
  • Pools interest, fines and other income; nets off expenses
  • One share-price setting drives every member's savings
  • Per-member payout and profit, computed and colour-flagged
  • Type-in-yellow, formulas locked — the fair maths can't be broken
  • Works in Excel or Google Sheets, on a laptop or phone

The tabs

  • Start Here (guide + colour legend)
  • Settings (share price)
  • Income (interest, fines, expenses)
  • Members (shares & payout)
  • Share-Out (value per share)

Yellow cells only. You type in the yellow cells; the rest are locked formulas. Gridlines are off and it prints clean on A4.

Set one number on Settings — the price of a share. On Members, type each person's name and how many shares they bought; their savings compute at once. On Income, enter the interest (service charges), fines and any expenses. The Share-Out tab then does the fair maths: value per share = the whole fund (savings + distributable profit) ÷ total shares.

Because every member's payout is simply their shares × that value per share, nobody can dispute it — the arithmetic is identical for everyone and visible on one tab. It's the exact calculation that causes arguments and dissolves groups when done by hand, made automatic and auditable.

Frequently asked questions

How is each member's share-out calculated?

The whole fund at the end of the cycle — total savings plus the distributable profit (interest + fines − expenses) — is divided by the total number of shares to get a value per share. Each member then receives their own shares × that value per share. Everyone is treated by the same formula.

Does this follow the standard VSLA / table-banking method?

Yes. It uses the share-purchase model from the CARE VSLA methodology, where savings are counted in shares and the end-of-cycle payout is proportional to shares held — the widely-accepted fair method.

Can the treasurer use it on a phone?

Yes — upload it to Google Drive and open with Google Sheets. No macros, so it runs on a basic phone or laptop at the meeting.
